Prince Harry and Meghan Markle once headed out to a lavish Halloween party, where they were joined by Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank – but a phone call meant the night took an unexpected turn
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are said to love Halloween, fully embracing all the traditions from dressing up in costumes to carving pumpkins. And in the early days of the romance, the celebration was one they were eager not to miss.
However, a “devastating” phone call they received while they were at a Halloween party during their dating days changed their lives forever – and left them worried. It came in 2016 when Harry and Meghan were still keeping their relationship under wraps and they were dividing their time between London and Toronto – where Meghan filmed Suits. As their relationship grew stronger, the couple started braving the outside world more on their dates – and when it came to Halloween, they both knew they wanted to go out and celebrate so came up with a plan.
In the unauthorised biography, Finding Freedom, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand say the couple was having the “perfect” evening at Soho, where a Halloween party was taking place.
They write: “They especially didn’t feel like spending Halloween weekend in hiding, as there was much to celebrate.
“Some four months into their relationship, they were madly in love and eager to take part in the fun of one of their favourite holidays.
“The evening of October 29, with Harry in town, the couple decided to go to a big costume party being thrown at Soho House in Toronto.”
The couple bought Venetian-style masks, which meant they could go about the party anonymously and nobody knew they were celebrating alongside a prince.
Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie was also at the party with her now-husband Jack Brooksbank, and the two couples were having a great time until there was an unexpected phone call.
A newspaper had found out about their relationship and was going to go live with a story the following day.
The authors write: “A cocktail or so into the party, they were both feeling relaxed, absorbing the Halloween spirit.
“It was possibly the perfect night out – until they received a call from one of Harry’s aides at Kensington Palace. It wasn’t good news.”
Since then though, their relationship has blossomed and now they’ve been married for over four years and have two children Archie and Lilibet.
And speaking on the Ellen Show last year, Meghan recalled that night out – and reminisced how it was one “final fun night out”.
She explained: “He [Harry] came to see me in Toronto and our friends and his cousin Eugenie and now her husband Jack, they came as well.
“And the four of us snuck out in Halloween costumes to just have one fun night on the town before it was out in the world that we were a couple.”
Ellen said: “So you went with Harry to a Halloween party and they had no idea it was the two of you?”
Meghan confirmed this, saying: “It was a post-apocalypse theme. So we had all this very bizarre costuming on and we were able to just sort of have one final fun night out.”
